Simple Money Making Plans – In Musician Style!

It’s mid summer and everyone is getting home from an amazing vacation!

But… what will you do for the rest of your summer besides just sit around and twiddle your thumbs?

Make some Do Re Mi of course (pun intended) 😉

As musicians, we tend to really enjoy playing, or singing, our music around others for them to enjoy as well as ourselves. So… why not make some money while you are doing something you really enjoy?!

Let’s check out different simple money making plans for musicians to use!

Performing on the Street: One of the easiest ways of making money as a musician would be to perform on the street corner and gather donations throughout the day. While many towns and cities require a permit for this, some don’t! However, just in case, check with your local town office for details.

Wealthy Affiliate: This is a great site to use for making money online. Plus, it’s super easy!

You may be wondering what this has to do with making money as a musician. Well, it does have A TON to do with it, I promise!!

As a site owner, you get to choose the name of your site and what your site will be about. If you absolutely love to talk about music and your experiences with the subject, creating a website about it is a great way to earn some extra cash!

Being a musician myself, I have used Wealthy Affiliate to create my music website 🙂

Become a Song Writer: Not the performing type of musician? More of a poetic type of guy or gal? Don’t worry! There are plenty more of ideas that are just for you, such as becoming a lyricist!

This idea can flow two ways, if not more. You can write some songs and sell them individually OR you can actually get paid for a gig as a song writer.

I cannot tell you how many singers I know who would do anything to get themselves their own lyricist haha!

Compose Songs: If you are great with music and composing with the notes, you can sell compositions! Kind of like how you would sell your songs as a lyricist.

Trumpeter Playing for Audience.Talent Shows: Communities and schools usually hold talent shows around certain times of the year.

When there are talent shows, there is usually prize money for the first three winners, unless the sponsors of the talent show provide prizes for everyone entering the show.

But… regardless… if you practice into an awesome routine for your performance, you’ll definitely have a chance in placing in the top three 🙂

I hope that you have found something here in my list to make you some money over the summer, or any time for that matter!!

Please share with family and friends!

Have any questions on how any of these ideas work or have any other money making suggestions for musicians? Leave a comment 🙂

Thanks a lot!

    Hi Jillian,

Great post from you as usual! When I was in my teens I actually wrote lots of songs. Well….words, kind of like poetry but I looked at them as songs. Still have most of them. Then about 10 years ago I started doing it again. Never did anything with them. Still sitting in a draw. I did add them to the computer in my little song writing file.

Do you think anyone would be interested in them? How would I go about putting them out there? They are just words, not music. You put some great ideas up there and certainly have me thinking. 🙂

Thanks again. keep up the great work,

Hey Kevin! Thank you so much! That’s awesome that you used to write 🙂 I do a little myself here and there. I haven’t ever actually sold my songs before, but I do know an easy way to definitely get them out there! I can recommend some really great programs to use to complete the task! First, it’s best to actually write the music for the song. This can be super easy. I am composing one of my songs at the present actually! I compose through ScoreCloud, but there are plenty of other free online composing sites out there, such as Note Flight or Musescore.

What you want to do in order to compose, is to come up with a tune for your song and then plug the notes into the composing program one by one. It can be time consuming, but also a piece of cake! To sell these compositions, you can upload them to certain sheet music sellers. One I know that participates in selling small music composers’ music, is Music Sheet Plus. As far as I’ve read, it is free to upload your compositions to their site.

Thank you so much once again for checking out my post and for the kind words 🙂 I’m in hopes that you get the chance to come back and visit us here at Mastering the Music again soon!

I wish I can play or compose music! I goes I have the opportunity to write songs, but I just need to learn where to start. I have had plenty of ideas and lyrics, but it just goes in my notebook never to see daylight again. Any suggestions how to put them in order?

Hey there Bing! Playing or composing music is easier than it seems, actually! For example, I’ve never actually played an instrument until last year! For my birthday a year ago, I received an alto saxophone as a gift. It took me a little less than one school semester to learn all the notes and keys of the sax! Pretty neat, right?! As far as composing your songs that you’ve got in your notebook, you can use online music composition sites to create your tune. This is as easy as just plugging notes in one by one and just giving minor adjustments throughout 🙂 For my compositions, I use ScoreCloud, but there are plenty of other free sites to use while composing. For example, there is Musescore and Note Flight. As an individual, I prefer ScoreCloud because you can download it to your PC for free! Hope this helped!

Thanks so much for stopping by today! I’m in hopes that you get to come back and visit us again soon 🙂

Hi Jillian, Thanks for the great info. I use to play out some in local pubs for tips at first and then the owners and regulars got to know me better and I wound up working for them for 2 years as their house guitar player. It’s a lot of fun and a great way to make a couple hundred bucks extra. I just wanted to encourage your readers to use their talents, have some fun, meet people and make a little extra cash.
